I’ve been writing a journal since the age of 12! I started with one of those diaries with a small padlock on it. I purchased it because it seemed cute, and started to scribble my thoughts into it. As I grew old, I started to purchase fancy pink diaries and that was my guilty pleasure because I hid it. I didn’t let my friends know about my fancy pink diary because a 17-year-old is not supposed to have a pink diary full of thoughts. It was frowned upon. I moved to subtle diaries and eventually an app on my laptop was my diary.

It was a long journey, writing all those unheard thoughts and hiding it from the world. The journey of my thoughts from paper to technology! It almost seems like my journal is my friend. It’s a friend I met in the park and thought, oh she is fun and now she is a habit!

Sometimes habits break, you grow out of them. I did too! I moved on in life and with all the hustles in life, I one day found myself in the shrink’s office. I had been battling anxiety and after a few sessions, my psychologist suggested me to pen down my thoughts. She told me that writing things would help me release my built up emotions, and will make me feel lighter!

I went back home, chose a diary from my collection which sat in my shelf calmly. Even though I stopped writing, I bought diaries. Maybe, I was guilty of betraying my only constant friend. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to go back and make that commitment, loving it the way I used to! I started to write, and there I was back to the paper.

Within a few weeks, I started to feel better! I may still have anxiety, but I do not feel lonely anymore. I have a friend, a friend for life- My Journal!

Reasons One Should Write A Journal:
It’s Your Safe Place
It’s Your Safe Place

Your journal is a safe place. You can vent out all you want! Had a fight with your best friend? Vent it out! Having troubles with your partner but can’t seem to say it out loud? Vent it down! Family Issues? Your journal will listen to you!

No matter what it is, you can confide in your journal. It wouldn’t betray you, wouldn’t get bored of you and will never disappoint you. It will be your friend who is always ready to listen to everything you have to say!

You wouldn’t have to keep your feelings bottled up, your journal would be more than happy to listen to you.

Helps You Track Your Own Behavior Patterns

By writing a journal you can keep a track of your behavioral pattern which will help you handle situations better. Once you are more aware of your behavioral patterns, you become more self-aware. It will help you improve your relationship with yourself. You would know better how to handle your own emotions, and this will help you react better to situations in a strategized manner.

Explore Your Creativity

The more you write, the more you become connected to your inner-self. You may start to write just facts about what happened during the day, and you’ll slowly start to notice that you are penning down your thoughts into the journal. Your journal is going to listen, and when you start to trust your journal and write more. You may feel a weird sense of being appreciated, and you definitely will be more creative. You’d have a platform to relieve all that creativity! You can write about all those ideas, all those beautiful thoughts in your head which you’re afraid to say out loud.

Makes You Feel Good About Yourself

You tell your journal everything and record your victories in it! You tell it how, when & why you achieved something. It is not only when you win something, but there are little things in life which one feels is an achievement, you do scribble those little moments in your diary!

You not only vent out your disappointments but your victories as well. When you feel low, go back to your journal and read about your victories that will definitely make you feel better about yourself.

Helps You Make Better Decisions In Life

Writing a journal may help you become more aware of your actions, and about your choices in life. It lets you keep a track of all your actions, you can always go back and read what you did wrong, and right. You can go back and recall your actions from the past. This can be used as a major advantage, you can use the mistakes from the past to strategize your future actions. You can easily avoid the same mistakes!

Make a new friend today, start writing your journal and maybe someone, someday would publish it!

At first, it seemed like we landed in Goa or Kerala but it was Sri Lanka. The streets/roads resemble so much so that you might want to check your boarding pass. Probably because of all the palm trees, weather & people that look no different than ours. A country with endless beaches, timeless ruins, unexpected weather, welcoming people, rolling turf and so much more making Sri Lanka irresistible.

Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, over the past few years has definitely scored a point on people’s bucket list. The undiscovered place that offers the best of nature and history. The country itself has 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Back in 2016, when I visited Sri Lanka, it was exciting & surreal. There were a lot of interesting things to know about the country like if you hail from India, you have to know this that Sri Lanka hardly has anything about Ramayana. The country is 90% Buddhist (which gives you one more reason to visit this place). Being a Buddhist myself, the country is packed with knowledge about Buddhism or Lord Buddha and it indeed is enlightening.

Here in this blog, we have listed Top 10 Places to Visit in Sri Lanka, if you’re planning an itinerary. It’s that place if you haven’t been to, you should.

In this marketing-oriented world, we are surrounded by advertisements everywhere. They have become such an unavoidable part of our lives that we try to overlook them on TV, billboards, metro stations, and every possible place we come across them.

But once in a while, we come across some socially relevant advertisements. They grab our attention and tell a powerful story. They deliver strong social messages with such ease that both the brand and issue etched in our minds forever.

So here are some of the best Indian advisements that put light on social causes which are worth watching.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Ad- Cleanliness Is Next To Godliness

This ad features Kangana Ranaut in the role of Goddess Laxmi along with other TV actors, including Ravi Kishan, Isha Koppikar and Amitabh Bachchan who narrates the ad. In the advertisement, a woman throws out the trash from her home without thinking about the people downstairs. A panwala cleans his kiosk while littering the street. An office-going man throws the trash out of his car’s window. Each of these people has a photo of Goddess Laxmi, which disappears while they litter the street and their surroundings. Later, Kangana Ranaut appears in the ad as Goddess Lakshmi who only stays where there is cleanliness. So this ad is a suggestion to the God-fearing common man than Cleanliness is next to Godliness. And urges them to maintain cleanliness not just at home but in their surroundings as well.

Dekh Le By Whistling Woods International

This ad by Whistling Woods International is a strong take on men who stare at women in public and treat them as objects. The ad displays four instances where women are being ogled by men with a relevant background song “Dekh Le Tu Dekhte Hue Kaisa Lagta Hai.”

The ad starts with two guys on a bike staring at the thighs of a girl wearing shorts and riding a scooter. In the second instance, three men in a bus stare at a girl’s cleavage while she is asleep on the shoulder of her friend. In another scene, a man ogles at a woman’s waist with a tattoo on it. And in the fourth instance, a man traveling in a train stares at a woman wearing a burqa. Later in the ad, one by one, all the men in those four instances are put to shame when women flash a reflective surface on their faces. That shows the men how stupid they look when they stare at women with their shameful intentions.

Ariel- Share the Load

This ad is a touching initiative by Ariel that sends across the powerful message that domestic chores are not just the responsibility of women. The ad displays a woman juggling between household chores and laundry while being on a work call. She makes tea for her husband, attend her father and clears the mess scattered by her son. The father watches her daughter handling several responsibilities at once. While her husband sits in one place watching TV and does nothing to help. He realizes how he set the wrong example for his daughter while bringing her up that only women are supposed to handle domestic responsibilities. At that moment, he decides to change by helping his wife with the household chores. This ad tries to send the message that helping around the house isn’t just a woman’s job. Men should share the load as well.

Vogue India- Boys Don’t Cry

With this ad, Vogue tries to convey the message that the serious issue of domestic abuse can be addressed at the early stage by changing the way we raise boys. Growing up, we all have seen people teaching boys that “Boys don’t cry” as it is considered the sign of weakness something that only girls can do to express their emotions. This core message is etched in their mind that crying portrays them as a sensitive individual, which is a girl’s domain and boys are not supposed to behave like that. So, these boys develop aggression and resort to violence as a way to express their views.

In this ad, there are shown several instances in a boy’s life where he starts to cry. While being sent to school, being taught to swim against his wish, being taken to a doctor’s clinic or being heartbroken after a relationship ends. But every time he starts to cry, he is nagged by parents and friends and told that “Boys don’t cry.” In the end, a boy is shown on the verge of crying while he twists the arm of a girl and leaves her on the floor after the incident of domestic abuse. Madhuri Dixit narrates in the end that we always teach our boys not to cry, but it’s high time we should teach them not to make girls cry.

Dove- Let’s Break the Rules of Beauty

The ad begins with a woman narrating that in India, there are 631 million women, but there is still only one face of beauty. Growing up in India, all girls idealize tall, thin, and gorgeous as the beauty standards and very few of them are able to match them. Throughout their life, this complex runs in their mind like an undercurrent. The advertisement shows women from the entire country having different complexions, age, and body shape. It attempts to break the conventional notion of being beautiful. In recent years, the country is observing sincere initiatives towards women empowerment. The aim of the ad film was to depict beauty as a source of confidence and it seems that it has succeeded in it. The ad has substantially strengthened the debate of evolving ideas of beauty in India.

The deep and powerful messages conveyed through these advertisements are commendable that challenges the stereotypes predominant in our society.

Movies are the most famous form of entertainment to most of the people around the world. From inspiring people to making people laugh – movies are always the best medicine when you are sad, depressed, happy, or bored. It works at least for me and many other movie buffs like me. There are various genres of movies like political drama, crime, murder mystery, adventure, comedy, satirical comedy, romantic comedy, etc. Apart from all these, there has been a development of another genre of movies.  Which has been quite rampant in India since the last two decades and that is called “road” genre. These are movies where the lead characters are traveling through amazing locales, taking the story forward, & bringing twists and turns in the plot. Some show traveling via cruise, some through motorcycle, some through airplanes, and some through a car. The characters are supposed to reach a destination and by the end of these movies, the characters not only reach their destinations but their perspective about themselves, surroundings, and life change too!

That’s why travel movies are always special. They inspire and motivate the weak. They urge lazy people to move around beautiful locales. These movies work like a beautiful dream and make you believe that travel helps in untangling the knots in life.

So, here are some of my all-time favorite travel or road movies from Bollywood & Hollywood!

Piku: Road Trip From Delhi’s Belly To Kolkata

When the idea of “road trip” comes to the mind, you generally think of your best friends or at the most, you can take a chance with your colleagues. But never ever could anyone think of a dad-daughter duo taking a road trip from C.R. Park, Delhi to Central Kolkata. But Juhi Chaturvedi (writer) narrates a wonderful story of a 70-year-old dad who is an eccentric person and his relationship with his bowel system. His disturbed and unsatisfactory bowel system is always the topic of discussion at the dinner table and his daughter is always irritated for his behavior.

Amitabh Bachchan playing Bhaskor Banerjee is never good to the neighbors or the maid and is also very clear that Piku (Deepika Padukone) should not marry & leave him. One night after a few drinks and dance, he had a heart attack and after recovering he decides to go to Kolkata as he is missing his own land. Due to his disturbed bowel system, and lots of other apprehensions, he decides for a road trip. The movie beautifully captures the heart of Delhi from the posh clubs to C.R. Park lanes, Select City Walk to the famous traffic and also the ghats of Kolkata, Church, local railway stations. In fact, Shookit Sircar (director) captured the “not so filmy-popular” locales of both the cities. He also captured the narrow dingy lanes of Banaras too! There is an emotion, love, understanding, care, and belonging to this travel story. Piku lost her father after this trip but she gained many other perspectives too! So, here, the travel was not only physical but also emotional.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: It’s All About Spain & Friendship

Three best friends meet after a gap of few years. The reason is a “promise” that they made to each other during college days that they will go for a road trip to Spain together. For some time, this trip has been canceled or postponed due to differences between two friends. But as it is the bachelor trip of the third friend, all of them make up their mind for Spain.

In this huge expanse of Spain, they visit the La Tomatina Festival in Buñol, Costa Brava, Seville, and Pamplona. Now, the deal was, all three of them had to plan some kind of adventure sport on this road trip and the other two had to agree. So, deep sea diving, sky diving, and participating in the “running of the bulls” are the three adventure sports that the leads of the movie encounter. With each sport adventure, their principle, belief, conscience, and fear of 3 friends altered. They confessed truth, secrets, and fears of their lives to each other on that road trip which was meant only for an adventure. That was the most amazing beauty of ZNMD. The beautiful cinematography by Carlos Catalan and amazing screenplay by Zoya-Reema duo make this movie a gem. Every travel enthusiast is a lover of this movie.

The Motorcycle Diaries: When Che Guevara Travelled Across South America

Che Guevara – Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, guerrilla leader, diplomat and military theorist was a prominent figure of the Cuban Revolution. His stylized appearance has become a ubiquitous countercultural symbol of rebellion and global insignia in popular culture. Che used to write a diary or memoir about his trip all over South America with his friend Alberto Granado. It is not only a road movie. But it is also about coming-of-age, adventure, youthful profligacy, injustice, prevailing social classes, and economic inequalities. The 23-year-old medical student on his road trip learns almost everything about life on this trip. This trip actually planted the seeds of revolt in Che Guevara and that’s why it is a must watch. Watch South America from the Andes Mountain to the coasts of Chile, the Atacama deserts to the Machu Picchu – Eric Gautier have done beautiful cinematography.

The Hangover: The Craziest Trip Ever

This is a cult Hollywood comedy movie that dealt with the story of 4 friends who goes to Las Vegas for a bachelor party. Now, the fun extends to some trouble and they face all of that together with lots of craziness and returns just on time on the day of the wedding at the venue. They form a chain of dirty secrets on that trip and promise to keep them under the wraps forever. You should never pray your bachelor party to be like this for sure. But you will always want to have some crazy memories with your besties on a road trip – right? This movie will give you that boost.

Highway: It Started With A Kidnap

The dark loneliness of Delhi at night & the unpopulated highway leads a group of goons to kidnap a young “soon to be married” girl. She belongs to a rich and influential family in Delhi. Her life changes completely when she is abducted by these goons. They kidnap her first in a car and then shifts to a truck. From Haryana, they take the girl to Rajasthan then to Gujarat, and then to Himachal Pradesh. Through this journey, you will not see the posh locales at all.

The cinematographer Anil Mehta had captured the rustic and pure natural beauty of India. The rugged terrains of the Himalaya or the loneliness of the Rann of Kuchh. Or the vast sugarcane fields of North India – the unsophisticated soul of these places just propels into your heart and stays forever. The best part of the movie is that the upper-class girl is kidnapped and while the goons are taking her to “not made for her” places she understands that she is free here in this whole “kidnapping” phase than she has ever been in her life. She understands herself better and forms an everlasting bind with the one who kidnapped her! Finally, you realize that human emotion is the same – over geographies & social boundaries!

Who doesn’t love shopping? A new shoe or sunglasses, a home décor item or even a teacup make us happy. Shopping is fun and many doctors say that it relieves stress too. But there is a difference between shopping normally and being a shopaholic. If you shop occasionally like before your birthday or before major occasions like Diwali, Christmas, etc. then you are ok. There is nothing to worry about. But if you are someone who loves to shop and cannot stay away from the shops or malls for more than 2 days then you are a shopaholic. If you don’t go shopping, then you may feel exhausted or anxious. There are some more signs that prove you are a shopaholic. Check if you have some in the following paragraph?

  1. Credit Score

Are you the one with multiple credit & debit cards in your wallet with at least 1 or 2 credit cards crossing the maximum limit? Then surely, you fall in this list. If you don’t pay off your balances each month and show more interest in continuing the habit and not at all worrying about the mound of debts that you have to clear, then, you surely need to check this behavior.

  1. Do You Save?

A savings account is a savior of course, where you can always go when you need to look after yourself or anyone in your family in times of emergency. So, if you have some disposable income (5-10% of your income) then you should put it towards savings on a monthly basis. Recurring deposits or fixed deposits are common to every regular people and in case you don’t keep anything like “savings” and keep on spending as soon as the money comes – it is a concern! You are a shopaholic.

  1. Review Your Closet

Pay close attention to your closet. If there are multiple colors of the same shirt/tee/skirt/kurti/dress belonging to the same brand, then probably you are a shopaholic. You simply cannot stop with just one item while walking through the mall. And check properly, in your closet, you may have clothes which you have never worn and also forgot when and from where you bought it!

  1. Shopping Works Like Medicine

Do you go shopping whenever you feel sad, depressed, or hurt? If yes, then, it is a sign that you are a shopaholic. Also, if you happen to leave with a grin on your face with so many shopping bags, then also you are tagged as a shopaholic. If you feel that, by shopping your state of mind, relationships, and current condition in life would change for betterment, then also you are a shopaholic. But this feeling of happiness & optimism may melt into challenging financial consequences too.

  1. Struggling With Overdraft

Financial strains are quite common and can happen once or twice. That can be the result of a bad budget plan or a forgotten transaction. But if you are causing bank overdrafts on a regular basis – then dear, that is a big problem. Check if you are the one who makes big purchases without checking your current bank balance, then you must be a shopaholic for sure. The passion for shopping the “desired object” is so strong that you simply buy it in an impulse.

Another habit of all shopaholics is that they tend to hide the shopping trips they make all over the week, month, or year. So, if you are one among them, who hide their purchases just out of fear of a lecture session from mom, then, you are a true shopaholic. You often feel embarrassed or enraged when people ridicule this habit of yours. But for a change, do listen to some wise advice as that would save your money!
