“Love Is When You Find A New Address In Someone’s Heart & Make That Your Comfortable Home For Forever”.

One cannot undermine the role of love in life. Love is the only thing we survive for. Love is the driving force behind everyone. Everyone loves the feeling of being in love. It is the most beautiful feeling to return to a special person every day after work. But ever wondered why do people fall in love? Apart from your physical appearance, your financial status, family prestige, and your luminous career, there is a certain psychological aspect to love. The common human psychology is to be around people who are alike in some way. People also tend to be around those who give a feeling of safety, who are happy and welcoming, and who are problem-solvers. In short, those people who inspire others to push their limits and become a better person are always preferred as lovers.

You may own some wonderful qualities which make your partner proud of loving you. There are actually no convenient all-inclusive explanation or any proven formula for why people fall in love. But, some common psychological reasons can be cited below.

  1. The Similarity of Choices
The Similarity of Choices

It is one of the most natural reasons to fall in love with someone. Each and every one has a set of choices, likes, and dislikes. So, when these likes and dislikes match with someone in the vicinity, we very easily become comfortable with that person. The similar likes may lead to watch a sports tournament, go for a movie night, set out to explore a variety of food in the city, etc. It is very normal to like and go on loving someone with whom you share a similarity of choices. Also when it comes to the ideologies in life or the value system – similarity is an important factor to fall in love.

  1. Playing Hard to Get
Playing Hard to Get

When someone is casually approaching you, and if you say a “YES” instantly, that might kill the interest. On the other hand, if you are “playing hard to get” – that is what makes the other person chase you and eventually fall in love with you in a crazy way. But this may not apply to some people who love to live a simple life and for whom YES and NO means plain Yes and No.

  1. Being Happy & Cheerful

Nobody wants to be around mundane, irritating, and unhappy people. The happy, cheerful, and smiling people are popular because they spread positivity among people around them. This is thus one of the prime reasons behind people falling in love. Everyone wants to return home to a person who would lift up their spirits with a happy and cheerful smile and a positive conversation. So, it can be your happy and cheerful vibe that might lead people to fall in love with you.

  1. The similarity with Ex

Different people have different ways of handling their past relationships. But it is a common phenomenon to fall in love with someone who shares a similarity with an “EX”. The similarity can be in the appearance, clothes, choice of perfume, hairstyle, the color of eyes, fondness for a type of food, etc. There are also people who wouldn’t think twice before running from the vicinity of someone who shares some kind of similarity with an “EX”. But for some this “similarity with Ex” can be a reason of beginning a new chapter in life.

  1. Attention

If you are attentive towards what the other person is saying, there are large chances of the other one finding you the most suitable one to fall in love. Listening to all the big and small talks and participating in all the topics he/she brings on the table – helps one to depend on you. With your attentive nature, the other person feels comfortable and safe in your company.

  1. If You Own A Pet

Well, that might sound a little bit weird. But a research says that people find pet-owners more caring, loving, and reliable when it comes to commitments. The research was done on women in Israel who found men with dogs more suitable as lifelong partners. Maybe people with pets are happier, relaxed, and more approachable than the rest.

  1. Kind Attitude & Liberal Mind

For any love relationship to sail forward, it is very important to own a liberal mind and a kind heart. A kind attitude towards anyone who is in need or underprivileged is praiseworthy. People always feel guarded and relaxed in the company of such kind hearts. Owning a liberal mind that permits people to be different and be respectful towards the difference is the fine quality one looks in a love-partner. If you have these two qualities – you must be having many lovers!

  1. A Great Sense of Humor

Humor is very important to make someone feel happy and alive. Maybe you own a great sense of humor which is a source of strength after someone’s bad day. They say that a good laugh and good sleep are two medicines for every disease in the world. A good laugh often leads to a sound sleep later. People forget their tensions and worries while they are with someone who cracks a joke every moment. And again this quality is also essential for a long-term relationship.

There are at least 30 different varieties of dates all across the world. But the broad classification is: dry, soft, and semi-dry. The differentiation is done with the level of sucrose, glucose, and fructose content in them. The most famous dates are those found in the Gaza Strip which are extremely sweet and red. Another famous date variety is Zaghloul produced in Egypt and has dark red skin, long structure, and crunchy texture. The most expensive date is the Sukkary found in Saudi Arabia which has dark brown skin, soft flesh, and are very sweet in taste. Cuisines all across the world use date in various ways for its high nutrition value. It is a great source of vitamins and minerals, energy, fiber, sugar, phosphorus, zinc, calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium.

A 100 gram (3.5 ounces) of dates provide the following nutrients:

Calories: 277

Carbohydrates: 75 grams

Fiber: 7 grams

Protein: 2 grams

Potassium: 20% of the RDI (Respiratory Disturbance Index)

Magnesium: 14% of the RDI

Copper: 18% of the RDI

Manganese: 15% of the RDI

Iron: 5% of the RDI

Vitamin B6: 12% of the RDI

Making it a practice to have dates daily would thus be beneficial to your health in a great way. Read below and know how dates help in keeping you fit.

Dates Benefits

Cutting Down Cholesterol

There are many reasons behind rising cholesterol like unhealthy lifestyle, consumption of more saturated fat, excessive smoking, being overweight, etc. To combat this rising cholesterol, you must start having dates today. Dates contain very little fat and are free from cholesterol and thus including them in small quantities in your daily diet would keep a nice check on your cholesterol level. By lowering the cholesterol level, the weight loss regimen is also augmented.

A Reliable Source Of Protein

When you want a good amount of protein simply have some dates. Add dates to your diet and stay fit. Dates also keep the muscles stronger. Have a smoothie made of dates, prepare stew of dates, or eat a salad of dates – and enjoy your protein intake daily! Because proteins are necessary for building and repairing tissues in the body. Protein also builds enzymes, hormones, bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood.

Increased Flow Of Iron

Iron is a very important component of hemoglobin which is the substance in RBC or red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to transport it throughout the body. This hemoglobin embodies about 2/3rds of the body’s iron. And that’s why if you don’t have enough iron, your body can’t make enough healthy oxygen-carrying red blood cells. A date is an excellent agent of iron. If you have iron deficiency or anemia, fatigue or tiredness, chest pain, or shortness of breath, then dates can fulfill the gaps for sure. Additionally, it also purifies the blood.

Storehouse of Essential Vitamins

The most important vitamins that are present in dates are: Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, A1, and C. Therefore, if you are consuming a few dates every day, then you won’t have to take vitamin supplements. You will feel healthy for sure and your energy levels would be high due to the presence of natural sugars like fructose, glucose, and sucrose.

Make Your Bones Stronger & Healthier

Dates are known to be great for bone health. They are rich in selenium, copper, manganese, and magnesium which are all you need to keep your bones in great condition and prevent osteoporosis.

For Achieving A Strong Nervous System

Dates help fabulously in strengthening the nervous system because they are a good source of potassium and sodium which are proven secret behind a good nervous system. The potassium helps in reducing cholesterol and thus the risk of stroke is also checked.

For A Good Digestion

The high fiber content in dates makes them a great agent for a good digestive system. Soak a few dates in water and chew them daily. Don’t throw away the water – drink the water too. In case you have constipation, then that would also be cleared away with this habit.

In Case You Dream Of A Flawless Skin!!

Who doesn’t dream about a flawless skin? Dates help you achieve exactly that. The presence of Vitamins C & D provides elasticity and smoothness to the skin. It carries anti-aging benefits and also prevents the accumulation of melanin in your body. Apart from that, all kinds of skin problems can be solved with dates.

Best Dose To Eliminate Hangover

You are never ever sure about what works the best to eliminate hangover after a fun party night. Just remember to rub the skin of dates a bit and soak it in water overnight while you are partying hard. Eat this date and its water in the morning and that bad hangover would simply vanish giving you the energy to work through the day.

Better Brain Function

Dates are believed to provide excellent brain function. Numerous researches and experiments have proved that dates are helpful in lowering inflammatory markers like interleukin 6 (IL-6) in the brain. High levels of interleukin lead to Alzheimer’s and by consuming dates daily, you can reduce that risk. Plaques accumulate in the brain and that disturbs the communication between brain cells that may lead to brain cell death and Alzheimer’s. Dates don’t let that plaque formation happen at all.

Dates are really healthy options to include in your diet. As discussed, they are a great source of nutrients, proteins, vitamins, and antioxidants. There are many ways of including dates to your daily diet. The easiest way is to add them in any dish as a garnishing and enjoy the natural sweetness. So, start adding dates in your daily diet and see the change in your fitness level!

SRK – the name that has been ruling the Indian entertainment industry for the past 26 years now. His charisma is unflinching and his stardom is sky high – reaching newer heights every day. He is one of the most loved movie stars this world has ever seen. In India, before SRK, people have seen the stature of a Rajesh Khanna & Amitabh Bachchan, but the magnitude of Shah Rukh Khan’s stardom is seen hardly in a century. Nasreen Munni Kabir in his documentary, “The Inner & Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan” described him as the biggest movie star ever. His popularity can even surpass the likes of Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt put together.

In this time of growing stardom of Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, etc. the position of Shahrukh Khan is still secure (Just look at the crowd at Mannat every Sunday or on his birthday!) Because, who has that destiny to hold a record number of nominations – 226 in total, out of which he won 207 times and to be precise won 29 times for the Best Actor. The most prestigious Filmfare Award was won by him 8 times for Best Actor and he was nominated in this category for 25 times.

The Indian cine-goers have applauded Padma Shri Shah Rukh Khan mostly in his romantic avatars because no one can romanticize the idea of romance like SRK does! But personally, he doesn’t like these romantic roles much. It is those action-packed thrillers that give SRK the kick! But he became what he is today for playing those Raj/Rahul’s on-screen who magically opens his arms for the actress. His signature pose is supported by a flawless comic timing & an endearing melodrama!

Before he celebrates rather the whole nation celebrates his 53rd birthday, let’s rewind and find those characters that prove that SRK is more than just the “King of Romance”.

Chak De India

Releasing the same year as Om Shanti Om, in 2007, this movie is a milestone in his career for sure. Even the SRK-haters would also agree to this point. A failed hockey player who is hell bent to build the Women’s Hockey Team in India so that his mettle is proved – is a cinephile’s delight! As Kabir Khan, SRK was at his best. What a personality we saw on screen! Kabir Khan’s eyes were always in the search of positivity. His motivational speech to his players or the last scene where he breaks down completely after the win – are two of the best moments of this great movie directed by Shimit Amin.

Dear Zindagi

This movie released in 2016 and Gauri Shinde is the 4th woman director who directed SRK. His role was of a psychiatrist which was like an extended cameo presence. Chak De India made him a mentor and this movie made him a therapist. As Dr. Jehangir Khan, he gives some life-altering lessons to Kaira played by Alia Bhatt. This is another Un-SRK movie where he is not given any love interest although the enchanting and mysterious personality of the psychiatrist makes the patient fall in love.

This movie gave him a strong foothold in Bollywood. K..k…k…..k … Kiran. What a scream was that! Directed by Yash Chopra, this movie released in 1993 and had Sunny Deol as the lead actor of the movie. But guess what! SRK stole all the thunder with his negative role. His eyes were piercing like a hawk! The creepy stalker – he is simply not afraid to kill to get to the love of his life and that amazing performance still give us goosebumps. This is one of his finest performances. In an era where playing a negative role almost killed the dreams of actors, SRK played this role of Rahul Mehra and things changed!

A never seen before Shah Rukh Khan was presented in this movie directed by Ashutosh Gowariker that released in the year 2004. This year also saw the timeless romance in Veer-Zaara. But this movie was again a path-breaking one for SRK. He played the role of a NASA Project Manager who comes to India and realizes his duties towards the nation. He completely discarded that “Star” aura with this movie and became one with the character named Mohan. The pain in his eyes seeing kids selling a glass of water for 25 paise is really commendable. He is truly bigger than that “King Of Romance”!

Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa
Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa

Primarily, if you look into the story of this movie, it is a soggy story of any commoner. Someone who doesn’t look good, is not great at studies, not interested in the family business, but desperately loves a girl who doesn’t have any future plans with him! Shah Rukh Khan as Sunil won the hearts of Indian audiences with innocence and flaws. Sunil loves Anna and music but none is giving him anything crucial in life. But he doesn’t lose hope. It was one of the oldest movies of SRK that released in 1994 and the lovely performance won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor-Critic.

Directed by Santosh Sivan, Asoka released in 2001 and saw an SRK never seen before. He played Emperor Asoka in the movie who fulfills family duties, falls in love, and then sees the atrocious Kalinga war and chooses the path of peace called Buddhism. Shah Rukh Khan walked the regal way while portraying this historical character. The long hair and intense eyes didn’t make him a Box Office winner but it is one of the finest performances of SRK sans romance!

He says that he was able to buy “Mannat” due to this movie. This movie permanently nailed his superstardom in India. He was not totally a hero or an anti-hero in this movie. But yes, he was very much a believable actor. The role of Vicky Malhotra/Ajay Sharma couldn’t have been historic without Shah Rukh Khan. A ruthless person who throws Shilpa Shetty from a tall building is hard-hitting that scares us like hell. But this man is on a mission of taking revenge for his family. He romances the enemy’s daughter and wonderfully enough he portrays both the heartless and lovable characters with ease.

Kal Ho Naa Ho

In one of his interviews, he told that may be his biography or autobiography would be named “Kal Ho Naa Ho” and this is the tune or song that would be played at his funeral. Many say that this movie directed by Nikhil Advani released in 2003 is a modern-day version of Anand. SRK’s sensitive portrayal of Aman Mathur – a dying man who teaches the meaning of life to fellow neighbors is unforgettable. He made us laugh, cry, and fall in love. Although it is a romantic movie we saw other facades of SRK more in this movie.

Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman

Again a common man story! This is a story of any small town boy or girl who is ambitious and wants to work hard to reach success. Raj Mathur, lovingly known as Raju by neighbors is from Darjeeling who comes to Mumbai to become a big engineer. In his new city he finds love and in office, his boss falls in love with him. This story is not only about romance but shows how difficult is it to lose the moral grounds and how far people go in the name of “earning some money”. Money became so important that the life of human beings seems nothing in front of that. SRK – a middle class from within portrays these confusions beautifully.

My Name Is Khan
My Name Is Khan

This is perhaps one of the most challenging roles of SRK. He played Rizwan Khan, a survivor of Asperger’s Syndrome. SRK pulls off this character with utmost brilliance and conviction. Directed by Karan Johar this movie released in the year 2010 and dealt with real-world issues without getting too preachy. The performance of Shah Rukh Khan in this unconventional movie proves why he is more than just the “king of romance”.

Why SRK is a big hero in our country? That is perhaps a million dollar question. But probably because every average Indian person sees a part of themselves in him. He never had the charming looks of Rajesh Khanna, the baritone or height of Mr. Bachchan, or the highly built-up body like Salman Khan. He looks very average, with medium height, boisterous hair, & an ok kind of physique – this is the look of real India. A nation still described as poor, inhabited by middle-class people requires some kind of magical success story as an inspiration or hope. SRK is that dream & motivation. He injects the thought that wherever you are in whichever field you are – if you work hard and remain focused – no one can snatch away your success story!

Raising a toast to many more successful years of SRK!

Love is the prime ingredient of life. Without love, there is no meaning to life. Falling in love is thus very important and more important is to stay in love. Love makes you a better person for sure. A healthy love relationship can be called a near about perfect relationship. Because day in and day out, both the partners learn something positive from each other. These lessons help in the personal growth of an individual. That leads to better performance in every other department of life too.

  1. If your partner sees more positive things in you than you analyze in yourself, then truly that helps you to be a better person. Any positive input sets the mind in a better place. So, when you are critical of yourself but your partner is not, you would improve for sure. For example, if you feel that you are not smart enough but your partner feels the opposite then you would start improving your attitude and that would make a huge difference.
  2. In many ways, the interests and likes of your partner may help you in expanding your horizon. For example, if your partner loves bungee jumping and you have never tried it before, then you may have a life-changing experience with him/her. It would give you a victorious feeling. And you would be satisfied with trying something new and out of the ordinary. This would help in retaining the freshness in your relationship.
  3. You always gain from the good habits of your partner. If he/she is great at maintaining health, finance, or psychological habits, then the positive effects would brighten you up. If your partner maintains a healthy lifestyle by discarding junk food and adopting meditation, then after a certain point of time, you would also feel like following the same path seeing great results.
  4. Anyone can be happy with you on your good days. It is the bad days of your life that shows you the true colors of the people around you. If your partner is appreciative and supportive of you in your bad days, then obviously you are in a great and healthy relationship. A warm hug and a few supportive words give a better emotional strength to endure the challenges in life. Once your partner does that you, then you also become more positive towards the challenges in life.
  5. If you see that your partner encourages your habits. Then definitely it is a sign of a growing and healthy relationship. For example, if you hum all the time and your partner encourages you to take singing seriously and participate in competitions or concerts, then that is really praiseworthy. You would feel fulfilled in this relationship and be a happier version of yourself.
  6. Your love relationship helps you with “self-acceptance”. When you tell your partner about your likes, dislikes, things that make you anxious or things that make you vulnerable, etc. and your partner still accepts you and loves you. Eventually, you also start accepting yourself in a better way. For people who worry that they are incompatible or unlovable, a healthy relationship can put them in a better emotional state.
  7. Your partner doesn’t tolerate your negative attitude and so you change in positive ways. For example, your partner doesn’t tolerate you being a melodramatic person. And with the flow of time, you change yourself because you learn that there is no value of this melodrama and that definitely paves new development for you. Or in case, your partner doesn’t appreciate your racist or homophobic statements and asks you politely to change it by making you understand the reality. Then, of course, he/she is working on making you a better human being – that itself is commendable! Or, your partner doesn’t tolerate racist or homophobic statements. They call you on these things and you change for the better.
  8. Your partner loves you and that’s why he/she loves your dreams and desires too. So, while supporting you practically, your partner allows you to pursue your big business aspiration. This will definitely help you to rely more on your partner emotionally because you know that your partner gave you the wings to fly.

Appreciate all the good things in your partner and to address the bad things be patient and understanding. In any healthy love relationship, understanding is the mainstay. It makes one feel free and that is a sense of freedom is the key to happiness. Once a person knows, he/she would be accepted as they are, the person tends to be more successful in individual goals. That’s what a healthy love relationship is all about!

Relationships are the most vital parts of human lives. The relationship with family members, friends, colleagues, and other relatives form a major part of life. In any relationship be it with parents or love interest, communication is the key. A healthy communication in every relationship leads to fulfillment and happiness. While less and more communication leads to the death of a relationship. In the yesteryear ages, communication was pricey because there was nothing called phone (read smartphone). People waited for letters to arrive to know about the well-being or development of lives miles apart.

With the arrival of the land phone, distance in communication was shortened and people waited for a call, made a call to release their stress, and talked to make someone feel better. But now in this age of extensive communication, sometimes it feels that life was better back then. We all live in a society where everyone is available virtually – the uncle of USA, the aunty of UP – everyone is active on social media. This is a sign of progress for sure but this has also led to some unwanted and unnecessary tensions in relationships.

The friendships or relationships with people was way better and healthier back in those days. For example, in a long distance train, initially in your younger days, you must have met an uncle, aunty, and their kid and shared food, gossiped about the society, gave your opinion about the current political system, etc. and while saying a goodbye perhaps taken their contact number and called them up sometimes! Or at least, you remember the words and laughter exchanged. But now when you look at the railway stations or airports, everyone is either busy on their laptops or mobile phones checking everything through apps, chatting with virtual friends, shopping online, etc.

The barrage of things like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. have opened many avenues for many people. When taken positively, they help in constructing people but it is definitely taking a toll on personal relationships!

Here are the ways it is affecting our personal space and relationships:

Expecting Unrealistic Goals From Partner

Social Media posts about celebrities tying the knot in a certain way or about other couples who are spending a great time in some exotic locales or seen proposing to each other in some unconventional manner often create a jealousy in mind. You may start expecting these things from your partner too completely forgetting that your significant other loves you, wants you, and cares for you in the way he/she feels ok. Somewhere, you have forgotten to be happy in your way. Because you are busy comparing your life and relationship with what you are seeing “online”. You forget that people tend to show their better version of themselves on these platforms. So, remember that what you and your significant other want from each other are completely different from other couples and that’s why try to be happy in your own world.

The Untiring World Of Showoff

These social media platforms have become a way of “show off” to people in a big way. Initially, people used to show off only in the marriage functions or social get-togethers with their clothes, jewelry, and of course vanity! But now attending these social get-togethers are not so important. In fact, in a marriage function or any other family meet, all of you are seen busy clicking the spread of food, home décor, and a family picture for that perfect #instapost. The real happiness of meeting people, greeting them, and chit-chatting with them can happen only by keeping the phone away. You have forgotten that! Then again there is something called “official” too. Until and unless you upload a happy couple picture on Facebook, the relationship is not validated at all.

There are couples who are facing a challenge in their relationship. But the “social media” posts speak of that perfect love story! Now, if your significant other keep your relationship a secret online, then that also leads to a fight – which shouldn’t be the case! Your relationship should be accepted by you two because the whole world has got nothing to do with it. And pragmatically your social friend circle won’t be there to take care of you in your emotional breakdown.

Privacy Of Relationships

Privacy and social media are like two parallel lines – simply reluctant to meet each other. There are people who keep on posting about their feelings “online” – feeling heartbroken, feeling betrayed, feeling special, feeling disgusting, etc. The couples in a relationship also post something about each other every hour or day. But, hey! Is every aspect of your relationship is for public purview? As said, the whole world has minimum interest peeping into your personal space. And most importantly when you and your partner are facing a tough time, you must deal with it tactfully personally rather than washing your dirty linen in public. The more you post about your relationship ups and downs on social media, the more you become a narcissist, egocentric, and selfish.

And when you are busy posting things about your relationship “online”, then you don’t have that time to invest constructively to your relationship. When you start sharing your personal problems online, some people often tend to be nosy. They keep asking you questions after questions and that would eat up your peace of mind and sanity.

Under Constant Surveillance

Social Media has really crept under the sheets of relationships. Many relationships these days are losing their weight due to the heavy use of social media. See, it is completely ok to check your significant other’s profile, gaze at their new DP, or reading the comments again and again. But what’s not pertinent is to keep a track of whose photos your partner has liked. What has he/she commented on a picture, and where has he/she checked in with how many male and female friends, etc.

Social Media updates about “whereabouts” is getting dangerous this way. You are under constant surveillance of your partner. Liking and commenting on someone else’s picture is not a “lack of trust” and should not bring jealousy in you. Your partner is entitled to have a personal space too. Where he/she can enjoy a drink, chit chat, and food with other friends. And that’s absolutely ok and normal!

So Easy To Trick

Be it Snapchat, Whatsapp, Messenger, Instagram, etc. – messages can be erased with a button. So, people have become smarter in hiding things like embarrassing pictures, naughty messages, and revealing voice notes. So, that ways, you can keep secrets while communicating with people on social media. Social Media gives a platform to connect to people and this is the space where people are often bold and carefree a lot more than their personal life. It is thus very easy to find attention on social media platforms. Even when you are not serious, you can flirt with people and erase the messages later – this commonly happens! People do all these things in social media and hide from their partners. Well, this doesn’t mean that you would now start having a hunch on your partner’s credibility. But do check that you are not doing all these things.

Overall, social media is definitely not going to erase now. It would grow bigger in the upcoming years and that’s why you should iron your ways to use it. While you have started to use social media, obviously you don’t have all these aforesaid intentions in your mind, But this is a web where people often slip. Have clear intentions and conscious because social media alone cannot eat up your relationships, but the way you operate it would kill your relationships. Make it a habit of sitting with your real friends, family members, and relatives without your phone. Because what you share with these people is going to enrich your life and not your social media personality!

Cinema is entertaining because it shows you everything in motion. It is not only the actors you like on the screen that makes a good movie. If you have loved Amitabh Bachchan & Rekha dancing amidst the Tulip gardens in Amsterdam, then Kay Gee deserves a big thanks. If you have loved the Paharganj in Dev.D, then Rajeev Ravi should be thanked. Yes, I am talking about the cinematography in movies which builds up a city in front of you. Every city has a history, culture, and flair and a good cinematographer captures these nuances beautifully. For example, with the mention of Haider or PK, you would remember Kashmir or Delhi because these places were shot that amazingly!

Here is a list of my favorite 7 Bollywood movies where the work of the camera in capturing a city was beyond excellence. These works were so good that just like the lead actors of the movie, the cities also became a character that would never leave your mind.

Kahaani: Would-Be Mother With A Motive In Kolkata
Movie Kahaani

Kahaani directed by Sujoy Ghosh would remain one of the dearest thrillers of Bollywood of all time. Every aspect of this flick was extraordinarily beautiful. It is the story of a pregnant woman from London who comes to Kolkata for the first time in search of her missing husband. It is perhaps the best work of Setu, the cinematographer who shot the city wonderfully. The early morning – when the city wakes up & gears up to face the day; the mid-day – when the city is tired and perspiring; evening – when the city starts wrapping up and calling the last passengers; night – when the city is bare & naked – that’s the time when truth runs fast and you have to capture it before it slips.

The pre-puja preparation, the sweet language, the “always ready to help” people, the flawed Hindi, tea in small glasses & earthen pots, Kolkata Kachori, Dharmatala, Mocambo, the nostalgic-narrow lanes of North Kolkata, the posh South Kolkata, opulence of Victoria Memorial – Kolkata was never so true & so captivating before. The special mention has to be the last scene where Maa Durga is immersed & the voiceover of Mr. Bachchan plays at the background – it really gives you goosebumps!

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: A DCH in Spain ….
Movie ZNMD

10 years later another Akhtar gifted us another road-trip movie where again 3 friends are going somewhere to find themselves. Carlos Catalan shot this movie and shown Spain just like another character actor – sometimes messy, sometimes clean & clear, sometimes heroic, sometimes villainous, sometimes friendly, and sometimes like a stranger. The large expanse of Spain, its culture, architecture, tradition, food, lifestyle – everything was an intrinsic part of this movie. Spain crafted by Carlos Catalan was the stage on which the rest of the lead characters enacted their part. The last part of the movie where that famous Bull fighting happens still gives goosebumps!

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani: Friends, Trek, Travel, & Destination Wedding
Movie YJHD

This is one of the fanciest movies of Bollywood made in the recent past. The story of 3 friends befriending another one on a trekking trip to Manali (originally shot in Kashmir) & their reunion in a destination wedding in Udaipur was shot by V. Manikandan. From the lofty Himalayas to the royal Udaipur – the movie was a visual treat for sure. Hidamba Temple in Manali, the Oberoi Udaivilas where the wedding takes place, and the Bagore Ki Haveli in Udaipur. These are the prime locations which would leave you with a feeling of visiting these places once.

Rang De Basanti: College Rebels Bringing A Revolution
Movie RDB

One of the top cinematographers of Bollywood, Binod Pradhan shot this iconic movie. It is a tale of 6 college friends and how they pledge to take revenge with the corrupt government officials and change the system. This movie was shot in over various places like Delhi, Mumbai, Rajasthan, & Punjab. Generally, in movies to introduce a city, the iconic monuments are shown. For Delhi, India Gate is shown to introduce the city. That scene where DJ & his friends make a chakkar around the India Gate would remain as one of the best scenes in the history of Bollywood. The dingy and narrow lanes of Old Delhi, the posh South Delhi, cultured India Habitat Center, All India Radio – you can instantly feel the presence of two types of Delhi in this movie. One is still struggling to be modern and the other one is trying to retain its values!

Of course, you would remember the Nahargarh Fort, which oversees the city of Jaipur and also Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara of Amritsar.

Highway: Rich & Well-Behaved Girl Kidnapped Or Freed….
Movie Highway

By the time Highway released, we all knew that Imtiyaz Ali is one of the best movie-makers of our generation. And he dwells on the idea of traveling. All through his movies, the characters are running from one place to another and all the locales are beautifully captured. And when one of the best cinematographers of India, Anil Mehta comes on board, things would be different. I believe this movie didn’t give much credit to Anil Mehta. If Imtiyaz Ali was the story writer, Anil Mehta painted this story with his craftsmanship. Veera running on the Rann of Kutch post-midnight and finding nowhere to go – that one shot of the Rann led us to take a dive into the heart of Veera who is all vacuum at that point.

This movie traveled a lot with Delhi, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, & Kashmir. The dangerous hilly terrains were shown by placing the characters atop the bus! An unnamed village of Kashmir where Veera finds her home, snow-capped mountain, the folk singers of Rajasthan singing at a tea stall with Thar as the background – every frame of this movie was brilliant! So, ultimately, these places become a prominent character in this movie which pricks & soothes the other characters.

Raanjhanaa: Love @ The Oldest City Of India
Movie Raanjhanaa

Varanasi or Benares, Banaras, or Kashi is the oldest city in India. This city was the most talked about the city since the medieval period. Till today, you could hear the history of the past centuries from the stairs of the ghaats, evening aarti, & the holy Ganga – which is the witness of time! Raanjhanaa was a beautiful love story that starts in Varanasi and ends in Delhi. The narrow lanes, colorful Holi celebration, temples, dialect, Ramnagar Fort, that half immersed Shiva temple – Varanasi was captured in the most flawless manner. Ganga Maiya (as the local people call) & Bholenath (another name of Lord Shiva) – are the two most prominent identification of Varanasi and you would see a deep presence of these two here. With a cut wrist, Kundan plays the damru during evening aarti; out of angst, he drowns Sonam & his scooter in the river. Varanasi looked endearing & Natarajan Subramaniam-Vishal Sinha are to be thanked for that.

Dil Chahta Hai: 17 Years …. & Still The Bible Of All Unplanned Trips
Movie DCH

Directed by Farhan Akhtar, it released in July 2001 and 17 summers have passed since then. An entire generation has gulped down this movie with awe! Ask any 90’s born kid and they would walk back the lanes of nostalgia with the mention of Dil Chahta Hai. This list would be incomplete without the mention of DCH. Which is the best shot of this movie? Anyone who has watched this movie would say out loud that the shot of Akash, Sid, & Sameer at the Aguada Fort in Goa. Goa was a popular destination in India but with this movie, the popularity touched its zenith! Many more movies have been shot here after DCH but DCH became like a brand-name for Goa Tourism.

Through the able lenses of Ravi K. Chandran, we have seen Goa like never before. The beautiful lanes, Arabian Sea, & the cool soothing breeze – you would always feel them through this movie. This movie was about the friendship of 3 people and their respective love-lives but for a considerable portion, you would take back Goa as that played as the pre-interval & ending high of the movie.

These were my list of some Bollywood movies where I found a stark presence of the city as good as the actors. You can share your favorites too!

So, after impressing the audience with “Orange Is The New Black” & “House Of Cards”, it is time for that much-awaited Indian original series on Netflix. Based on the novel of Vikram Chandra, “Sacred Games”, this series of the same name has managed to garner scrupulous reviews from people. It has become like a rage among people and the audience simply cannot wait for the next season to revive. This is an 8 episodes show of 40 minutes each that has left everyone in awe. In case, you belong to that minority group who still haven’t found time to watch this epic show, I have reasons for you to coerce you to watch it right away.

  1. The First Jolt
The First Jolt

That character of Nawazuddin saying “Bhagwaan ko maante ho?” (Do you believe in God?) & “Kabhi Kabhi lagta hai apun hi bhagwaan hai” (Sometimes I feel, I am the God) – gives you a certain shock for sure! No one has ever heard of such bold, dynamic, raw, & flabbergasting dialogues and that too on the first episode. In that terms, this series can be compared to Game of Thrones – the first episode is a bit hard to understand but once you survive that, the rest of the journey is smooth, engrossing, and enjoyable.

  1. Multidimensional Plots & Psychologies
Multidimensional Plots & Psychologies

Sacred Games start with a threat call to a Police Officer that if he can save Mumbai, then listen to my story. But this series is not only about saving Mumbai, but it also has too many underlying plots inside it. You will come across different stories and characters of different psychologies and flavors which add to your pure entertainment.

  1. Gripping Characters
Gripping Characters

This series is not only about the lead characters like Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui – who are definitely big names now. But Sacred Games is also a lot about the rest of the characters. Each and every character would leave a mark on your mind be it the Police Constable katekar or Jitendra Joshi, Bunty or Jatin Sarna, Parulekar or Neeraj Kabi, & Cuckoo or Kubra Sait. A special mention has to be Rajshree Deshpande who played Subhadra and Shalini Vatsa who played Kanta Bai. These are the two women who keep Ganesh Gaitonde, the lead character of Nawazuddin at a reality check. Varun Grover has done the character sketching brilliantly and the cast has done more than 100% justice to the given roles. You would simply rewind and watch again and again.

  1. Powerful Direction
Powerful Direction

An actor becomes powerful on screen for the hard work his/her director has done. The directors have the CV of “Gangs Of Wasseypur”, “Udaan”, “Satya”, “Dev.D”, “Lootera”, “Paanch”, “Black Friday”, “Trapped”, etc. So, undoubtedly, the show had to be that game changer. These mentioned movies are those handfuls which have changed the landscape of Indian cinema or gloriously presented India to the world platform and this time these two Anurag Kashyap & Vikramaditya Motwane have again done something for which the Indian audience would be forever thankful.

You would see the signature Anurag here with funny one-liners among the gangsters, witty fight or shootout sequences. And of course, the raw yet endearing use of Ma***C**d. There is the usual sex, ferocity, cuss words, nudity, and drugs. But nowhere you would feel these are unnecessary or crossing the line with context and that’s the true Anurag style. The softer tone of Sartaj Singh was directed by Motwane. Another signature of these directors is their eyes for detailing which is why you would feel satisfied with this series. So, the whole execution from storyboarding to acting, direction to editing – all are simply mind-blowing.

  1. Meaning Of The Name Of Episodes
Meaning Of The Name Of Episodes

One of the major highlights of Sacred Games is the interesting name of the episodes. All the names are taken from our great mythology and have a well-researched and deep connection with the content of each episode. For example, The first episode is “Ashwathama” – that Hindu legend who was cursed to suffer human life for 3000 years, in a way making him invincible. Ganesh Gaitonde utters that he is Ashwathama whose story won’t end till the story is over. He kills himself in the first episode but the story follows. Episode 4 is named “Brahmahatya” because Gaitonde is Brahmin himself but in his life, he does all those things that a Brahmin in Hindu won’t do like eating non-veg or killing people. Thus, he kills the Brahman inside him which led to this name. With the name of these episodes, you would learn many things not only about the plot but also about our mythology.

  1. The Never Seen Before Saif Ali Khan
The Never Seen Before Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan is in his biggest career low currently. With 7 films bombing back to back, he is clueless where things are going wrong. His choice of movies have definitely sharpened over the last few years but luck is not by his side with movies like Chef or Kalakaandi. But Sacred Games turned out to be a big-big achievement for him career-wise. He plays the role of Sartaj Singh who is an honest police officer who is aware of the dirty power games and corruption going around him in his department. He is not someone who would let go of moral standards and Saif Ali Khan convincingly pulls out this underdog cop role. This cop is going through an emotional jolt in his personal life too and that’s well narrated through his moves.

  1. Radhika Apte – When Charm & Grace Meets Aggression
Radhika Apte – When Charm & Grace Meets Aggression

She deserves some extra brownie points. Radhika Apte plays the role of Anjali Mathur who would not tolerate any non-sense at her workplace. She is a RAW agent and wants to prove a point that women in RAW are as good as their male counterpart on field. She is not happy to digest a desk job. That aggression on her eyes with a graceful body language is not to be forgotten at all. Radhika Apte deserves all the laurels for carting out Anjali Mathur with aplomb.

  1. The God Himself – Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Is there anything that this 5 feet 5 inches actor cannot do? After so many years of struggle in Bollywood, when we finally saw him in Wasseypur – he was like a revelation. He is truly a volcano of talent. The moviebuffs would always be thankful to Mr. Kashyap for introducing Nawaz to us. He plays Ganesh Gaitonde here – the notorious crime mafia who is up for no good. He goes missing for 16 years but revives with a powerfully spread web that may destroy Mumbai. The story begins in 2018 but Nawaz unfolds many roots of his Gaintonde character from the 80’s. We all know what a terrific performer he is and Sacred Games have just added another feather to his glorious crown. He is more ruthless than Faizal but has a calmer and a more calculative mind than him.

Just like any other Anurag Kashyap creation, this Sacred Games is also like a great addiction. Which you can watch over and over again without getting bored and tired. Because every time you may discover a new aspect to the characters, the nuances of acting, the brilliance of direction, etc. Another mention-worthy thing is the music of this TV series. Which has been made keeping the 80’s era in mind as the chunk of the story resides in that time. So, please watch Sacred Games now because this is the kind of TV series we all truly deserve!

What is the definition of Depression? Google says it is a feeling of severe despondency and dejection. As per the American Psychiatric Association, “Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home”. Do you feel like the one stated in quotes? If yes, then you got to do something about it.

Depression lies in that grey area which is a bit confusing. Living with depression requires a day-to-day management and to be able to do that, understanding depression is important. The treatment for depression, of course, would vary from one person to another. But many people suffering from depression have spoken about the ways in which encountering different situations, people and experiences through travel has allowed them to overcome depression in a natural way.

Endorphins and oxytocin – these two hormones play the major role that decides our moods. By traveling, endorphins and oxytocin are released in innumerable ways through different practices we encounter. Travel actually forces the brain to make use of these hormones to improve our mood and attitude. A survey was conducted that found traveling is a massive mood booster for people! Vacations, weekend short trips, long festive trips where people get time to look into nature, roam around with their beloved, and spend quality time with family – help to overcome depression.

Traveling may help you in ways you couldn’t have ever imagined.

Befriending Strangers

One of the common feelings of depression is to feel isolated most of the times. You feel like remaining aloof from the world and this is the place where negative thoughts crawl into your mind. Traveling, on the other hand, allows your mind to be more alert. You have to pay attention to what is happening around you because you are traveling which means you are away from the comforts and perks of your home. Unwillingly also you have to stop by and talk to a complete stranger because you have to know the correct way to the destination. When you are depressed, you simply want to minus people from your life – these people refer to your known sect of people. But while traveling when you see new faces around you, you may end up having a friendship of a lifetime with some!

This distraction from your regular life would give you an insight into a different world where people live differently. Listening to their stories, you may find your inner strength back!

Experience Yourself

Until and unless your limits are pushed or you try a bit more, you can never know your true worth. In depression, you always hold a feeling that you are not worthy enough. But with traveling, you can see your true potential and this building of self-esteem is very important. Suppose while traveling back from the sunset point at the hill station in the evening, the tyre of your car punctures and there is no way out but to spend the time atop the hills under the sky and stars. There may be some fear of unknown animals too! But you simply cannot escape this situation but you have to stick there and see the flip side. Just like others you if you go back to the hotel, you would miss experiencing yourself. Traveling would give you many such situations where you would have to push your limits or come out from your comfort zone, and these jerks off depression.

Inspiration Rushes Back

You may end up meeting someone who is in a bigger problem than you are! Every single person in this world faces some kind of issues and all are struggling in their own way to overcome that. A recent Bollywood movie named “Jia Aur Jia” portrayed something like that. Jia-1 was traveling in partnership with Jia-2. Jia-1 went on a trip to commit suicide and Jia-2 went to live the short life she has in hand (she was terminally ill, hardly 2 months of life she would live). When Jia-1 came to know this secret, she got her confidence back! You also might hear stories of your fellow passenger and get the inspiration back to your life. You may meet people from a 360-degree different lifestyle and that would lead to the exchange of ideas of a different level. Thus, meeting people would give you a completely different outlook!

The Big Picture

While you are depressed, your outlook becomes tilted and narrow because you are self-centered then. You are just concerned about your day-to-day life and your setbacks, loans, bills, failed relationships, etc. Now, at this point in time, you cannot evaluate yourself properly. But when you pull yourself away from this situation and travel, you tend to see the bigger picture. You can then see the world & its people and your situations from a different angle. That happens because you accumulate many experiences, stories of people, and these things help in curbing depression.

Healing Naturally

Nature is the storehouse of many powers. If you really want to come out of your depression, select the awe-inspiring places of the world like the Grand Canyon, Great Barrier Reef, Northern Lights, Santorini, Hagia Sophia, Cinque Terre, Hanging Gardens, The Great Wall Of China etc. Go for trekking or stay in an island, and talk with the nature. The universe has its own way of reaching out to you and answering all your questions. You will heal naturally and many research has also proved that going into the lap of nature is one of the best cures for depression.

Last but not least always remember that you are just the smallest of the small particle of this huge universe and now imagine if you are so tiny, how tiny your depression is? So, think at a larger scale and evaluate carefully. Every night wakes up to a new day and thus every depression would also find its solution. Just don’t give up – instead, pack your bags and experience yourself in a new way!

The author bio suggests that I am a cinephile and a foodie. Believe me, these are the two best things ever invented by human civilization. All I need for sustenance is food and entertainment – let there be chaos elsewhere! Now, when these two interests of mine come together, it leaves me in a perplexed state of mind – which one to love more?

What all you remember from a movie? The star actor? Comedians? Story? Dialogues? Clothes or jewelry? But when food becomes a character in a movie – things are really hard to choose. There’s a way of presenting food too in the movies. Sometimes, it is not an intrinsic part of the movie but the way an actor eats creates a craving in you. Remember how Ranveer Singh or Bittu in Band Baaja Baaraat was eating Bread Pakora with Shruti? And his Bread Pakora is so dear to him that he even swears on that! For that matter, the way Saurabh Shukla or Rishi Kapoor eat from their lavish plates in Jolly LLB and Shudh Desi Romance are also memorable!

Bollywood is more than a century old and it has given many memorable flicks which make us laugh and cry both. Here is a list of my favorite 6 Bollywood movies which left me with an endearing culinary experience.

Bawarchi (1972)

A bawarchi is the Hindi name for cook or chef. It was a typical Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie with dollops of food in it. In a middle-class family where the brothers and sisters-in-law fight with each other over domestic issues of who spends how much and who works how much, suddenly a Bawarchi comes and changes everything. He is a chef with unique abilities to work non-stop all through the day and night. And his dishes are to die for. He can make cabbage taste like mutton! The united family enjoying their tasty meals is a sight to watch.

Cheeni Kum (2007)
Cheeni Kum

The best chefs of the world can say all the ingredients used in a dish along with the exact quantity of salt & sugar by smelling that dish once. They can also say for how long the rice has been cooked or for how long the bread has been baked. This movie was exactly like that where Mr. Ghasphoos or Amitabh Bachchan owns the best Indian restaurant in London named Spice 6. Food thus forms a huge part of this movie. He falls in love with the character of Tabu over a debate on Hyderabadi Zafrani Pulao. The film then condenses on normal daal-roti-chawal, brinjal curry, chicken kebabs, to the famous street foods of Delhi. An intense love story gifted by ace director R. Balki, this 2007 movie is still a food lover’s secret love.

Stanley Ka Dabba (2011)
Stanley Ka Dabba

Stanley Ka Dabba is one of the most heart-warming stories of this decade surely. Released in 2011, this movie garnered massive acclaims from each and every one. It narrated the story of an orphan child who works at a restaurant and gets abused & beaten by the owner of the restaurant, his own uncle. He is popular among his peers & teachers. Mr. Verma, the Hindi teacher of the school enters and the movie forges into something brutal. Mr. Verma is a glutton & phagomaniac who does not bring his own dabba either but lusts after everyone else’s, also stealing food on occasion. We see kadhi pakodas, samosas, bhindi, rajma, cakes, paneer, baingan bharta, etc. – many more to salivate!

You would experience a lust for food through Mr. Verma & to what extent he can go (rebuking or suspending a student for not bringing tiffin) for having food. You would also see how less food and more of love we need to stay happy in life!

English Vinglish (2012)
English Vinglish

Shashi, the entrepreneur knows to make the best motichoor ke laddoos and snacks for adding happiness to people’s lives. She also knows to make the best Rajma-Chawal & Parathas. She is the epitome of Goddess Lakshmi. The whole movie & its basic plot of “Is English so important?” runs on one side and on the parallel side are the lovely foods and sweets. In a PTM also, she talks about banana chips & murukku. She joins the English Speaking class and there also she becomes popular for her recipes! This feel-good movie would always remain special for the ghee-lathpath motichoor ke laddoos.

The Lunchbox (2013)
The Lunchbox

Directed by Ritesh Batra, this movie is touted as one of the best love stories of our generation. The love story blooms over dabba or lunchbox that is wrongly delivered. So, every morning you would find the housewife cooking and packing the food while having a chat about food with the lady staying upstairs. The love notes are exchanged through the lunch boxes and with each passing day, there are some new dishes, new stories shared, and a new love! A supporting character is shown chopping veggies on his office files while going back home in Mumbai local. Through Alu Gobhi, Matar Paneer, Daal Fry, Fried Rice, Raita, etc. – Nowhere this movie lost its connection with food!

Ki & Ka (2016)
Ki & Ka

In a mediocre way, this movie challenged or questioned many things that our society follows. Why cooking is associated with a woman? Why only a man should earn more than the woman to run the family? Why a woman is not given due respect and appreciation when she decorates her house or cooks food? Why the movie turned out to be different was the fact, all these questions were put up by the male lead who believes her housewife mom was no less than an artist. He marries the lady for whom making a cup of coffee is no less than rocket science. From fluffy Spanish omelet to spaghetti, healthy salads to Rajma Chawal, beaten coffee to cheesecakes, chicken tikka to daal fry – you would feel the aroma of food traveling from the screen to your room.

There are many such movies where you would find a nice presence of food through the characters who are either eating them or talking about them. Movies like Ramji Londonwaley, Chef, Duplicate, Dawat-E-Ishq, Hasee To Phasee, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, etc. are some foodgasm in motion for sure. Those who love movies & food both (like me) find a heavenly comfort in these movies. Watch these movies again (in case you have watched it before) and enjoy the lip-smacking experience again!
