Looking into the history of Bollywood for the past two and half decades, one thing is crystal clear that Bollywood loves the Diwali time. Since the time people started staying away from their home and made returning home during Diwali a tradition – Bollywood has used this scope beautifully. Go back to your parent’s childhood – they never had big-budget Diwali releases. It all started with the open gates of globalization if you think deeply.

Anyways, so, Diwali is the time when people meet and greet their family, close relatives, and friends. Everyone wants to spend some quality time and movies are one of the binding forces here. People love to go to the theaters with their loved ones and fortunately Bollywood has always gifted some amazing movies to its large audience on Diwali. They say Goddess Lakshmi blesses people on Diwali. Looking at the Box Office report of the last 25 years, it seems Bollywood has got all her blessings as the Hindi Movie industry has profited the most from Diwali.

Check out the list of the historic Diwali releases of Bollywood that created big Dhamaka:
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

This is the longest-running Indian cinema. It was the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra and till today remains one of the most iconic movies ever made in Bollywood. Every girl hopes to meet a Raj while on a trip and those leather jackets of SRK are still a favorite among youngsters. A sweet and innocent love story set in Europe and Punjab – this movie always make us fall in love with the concept of love …. All over again (just like its tagline)

Raja Hindustani (1996)

Every actor has that one movie that plays a pivotal role in his/her career. This movie changed the graph of Karisma Kapoor in Bollywood. The love story of a rich girl and poor boy is nothing new in Bollywood and this movie gave a fresh & innocent touch to the same old storyline. Supported by soothing & melodious music, this movie introduced Karisma Kapoor in a new way. It set the Box Office on fire and the make-up & costumes (Manish Malhotra) of Lolo set a new trend among the youngsters those days.

Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)

The Box Office was blazing, no one could stop raving about the trio on-screen, the costumes (sporty and traditional both) became a trend, the music is one of the most soulful albums of Bollywood till date, and it also fetched all the prestigious awards that year. A musical love story circling a theater group is one of the milestone movies of 100+ years old Bollywood.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

Karan Johar stepped into direction with this college romance tale where an 8-year-old girl goes to bring the love of her father’s life back. Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol got another blockbuster to their name while Rani Mukerji got a secure place in this big Bollywood. The music, Mauritius, cool accessories, funky & sporty outfits, POLO t-shirts, and of course Friendship Day & Friendship Bands became trendy from this flick.

Hum Saath Saath Hai (1999)

Coming from Rajshri Productions, this is another non-violent film dealing with family issues. The year was 1999 and the formation of nuclear families just started when this movie came and made people believe in the magic of big families. In today’s time, it is hard to find such a big family and perhaps that is another reason why people go back to this movie again and again.

Mohabbatein (2000)

Aditya Chopra directed this movie to tell the story of a college where “falling in love” is a taboo. It sounds quite strange but it was believable back then. So, to save the three heroes of the movie who fall in love, there comes SRK with a violin in his hand, charm in his eyes, and confidence in his words. He taught to write love letters on a dry leaf, taught to love fearlessly, and also taught that loving only one person in life and beyond death is so easy. With soothing & melodious music, this movie gave six fresh faces to Bollywood.

Veer-Zaara (2004)

No one can design and dream of a love story the way Yash Chopra does. With his death, there is truly a vacuum in Bollywood love stories. We won’t get those timeless love stories anymore. This movie was special because Yashraj Films launched their music label YRF music with this movie. For this launch, they used the unused music of the Late Madan Mohan – recreated by his son. An Indo-Pak love story that made the president of Pakistan also praise the outstanding performances, this movie always makes you shed a tear. The impeccably emotional dialogues and scenes of SRK-Rani were the high-points for me. This movie still makes us believe in the power of selfless love. The lavish sets, beautifully designed costumes, beautiful cameos, and perfect cast won’t let you forget this movie easily.

Om Shanti Om (2007)

This is one of the biggest hits of SRK’s career and the only hit Farah Khan is probably looking for nowadays. The old reincarnation story was told here again but with the backdrop of a film personalities. A junior artist falls in love with a leading lady and dies due to a villain. They are reincarnated to complete their love story and the most unbelievable part was that the mother and friend of that junior artist were still alive to be a part of the lives of the reincarnated ones. Bizzare, impossible, and yet this Dard-E-Disco won hearts of people

Golmaal (2008, 2010, 2017)

The first one is still the best in this Rohit Shetty series. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th one got their Diwali dates and became big earners of the respective years. The story of 6 friends continues in various plots and problems with regular sidekicks like Sanjay Mishra, Murali Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, etc. People just want to have a great time laughing with their friends and family which is what the Golmaal series make them do.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)

This movie directed by Karan Johar saved the career of Ranbir Kapoor. After a few bad movies and a much-talked-about break-up, all he needed was a big hit. Karan Johar delivers what he does best and that is a story about love and friendship. Here, one friend fell in love with the other and not vice-versa. But that didn’t stop the other one from loving with the same dedication because there is immense power even in one-sided love. Songs, Anushka Sharma’s heavy Kohl eyes-nude lipsticks-heavy jewelry, and Aishwarya’s dialogues won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Other festive seasons are also important these days and the top stars divide these big festivals among themselves. If you look closely, SRK has maximum Blockbusters that released in Diwali, Aamir has his Christmas, and Salman comes with Eid release every year. This Diwali will see Akshay Kumar with Housefull 4, Rajkumar Rao with Made In China, & Bhumi-Tapsee with Saand Ki Aankh. Hope they all do well and gift us some great stories to remember forever.

All our festive moments include great food and desserts. Food binds people, spreads happiness, and gives us memories to ponder forever. Diwali is our biggest festival and like all our festivals, sweets play a major role in this one too. As a gift for your loved ones or to treat the family and guests, there are various types of sweets. The days of old grannies are gone when all these sweets used to be prepared in the kitchen itself. Now mostly people order from the shops nearby or online to treat or greet people on festive moments.

Laddoos are the most special types of round sweets and there are various types of Laddoos. Coconut Laddoos are the Diwali favorites along with the Motichoor ones. Coconut is a tropical fruit that is crunchy and tasty. There are many benefits one can draw from coconuts because it is a powerhouse of antioxidants. It helps in raising the good cholesterols and also offers a good amount of potassium to the body. Coconut is known to boost immunity, cut down fat, control diabetes, increasing energy, improving bone and teeth health, and fighting the aging process.

Preparing coconut laddoos at home is very easy. Diwali comes once a year and thus you must do something different so that people remember your sweet dish. Here, I will let you know about two different, unique, and new type of coconut laddoos. Just follow the simple steps mentioned below:

Orange-Flavored Coconut Laddoo

Ingredients:

Ghee – 20 ml

Chopped Almonds & Pistachios – 1 tsp each

Orange Juice – 400 ml

Sugar – 150 gms

Cardamom Powder – ½ tsp

Grated Coconut – 160 gms

Process:
  • Take a pan and heat 10 ml of ghee first and then add the chopped almonds and pistachios in it.
  • Let them fry in the ghee for some time and keep stirring. Once they are fried well, keep them aside.
  • Now take another clean pan and add the orange juice (there shouldn’t be any pulp in it remember that) and heat it for some time. Just before it starts to boil add the sugar (you may cut down 25-50 gms than the said amount).
  • Now you have to stir it and bring it to a thick consistency (just like the normal sugar syrups have)
  • Once you achieve the one string consistency of this sweet orange syrup, you have to add the cardamom powder and give another round of stir.
  • Now add the grated coconut, fried nuts, and remaining 10 ml of ghee and mix them very well. This mix should be greasy a bit but not watery.
  • Let the mixture cool completely for an hour. Keep it covered though.
  • Now grease both your hands with ghee and take two full spoons of the coconut mix to give it a round shape.
  • Follow the same step for the remaining coconut mixture and you are ready to serve.

The tanginess of orange here is sweetened by the sugar but still, the orange lovers would find the refreshing smell of their favorite fruit in it. It is a must-try this year to woo your guests in style.

Ingredients:

Betel Leaves – 8

Condensed Milk – 380 gms

Green Organic Food Color – 2 drops

Ghee – 2 tsp

Grated Coconut – 200 gms

Gulkand or Rose Preserve – A Small Bowl

Process:
  • Take the betel leaves and condensed milk along with food color in a mixer and a nice mix. The mixture should be smooth without any trace of leaves at all.
  • The paan mix should not be too watery or too thick. You can adjust that consistency with a spoon of water if you need it.
  • Keep the Paan mix aside and take a clean pan.
  • Put the ghee in the pan and let it heat up for a minute and add the grated coconut and give a stir for just 10-20 seconds.
  • Now add the paan mixture in it. Give a very nice stir so that coconut mixes with the paan mix properly.
  • Let this coconut and paan mix cool completely like in the previous laddoo recipe.
  • Now grease both your hands with ghee and take 2 spoons of paan mixed coconut and flatten it on your hand. Put 1/4th spoon of gulkand or rose preserve right at the center and cover it up from the sides. Give a round shape to it.
  • Your Paan flavored Coconut Laddoo is ready to be served.

Isn’t it a unique recipe for the lovers of coconut as well as Paan? The refreshing paan, sweet gulkand, and crunchy coconut will create a beautiful sensation inside your mouth.

There are so many things that fall under home décor that you will be flooded with choices. So, it’s better to jot down the likes and dislikes of your friends or relatives before buying a home décor item for them. For example, someone who loves to read books would appreciate a funky bookend. Someone who is a believer in Feng Shui would love a lucky turtle or wind chime. Therefore, look out for fancy lamps, bright curtains, decorative door soans, or quirky posters and shop the best ones for Diwali.

Plants

Due to the incessant use of firecrackers during Diwali, the level of pollution goes up, especially in the metro cities. So, plants would be a great gift cherished by your family and friends. On any weekend or while returning from work, go to a nursery and pick up some plants that are easy to care for and are fuss-free. Given the shortage of space in all the modern houses, indoor plants or bonsai or terrariums would be a great choice. They will break the monotony of the household objects and furniture apart from boosting oxygen supply.

Chocolates

This is a thing that can be given to anyone and everyone would love it. Those who face a lack of time to go out and shop or to look online and shop can simply send the mouth-watering boxes of chocolates. The branded ones or the exotic ones – both will work wonders. Those chocolates in the shape of a diya or “HAPPY DIWALI” written on them are also gaining popularity. So, choose the chocolates wisely and surprise your best buddies or relatives.

We hope these shopping ideas would help you a lot to surprise your friends and family this Diwali. So, hurry up and hit the stores to avoid the last-moment rush.
